The AR-15 is based on the 7.62 mm AR-10, designed by Eugene Stoner of the Fairchild ArmaLite corporation. The “AR” in AR-15 comes from the ArmaLite name , and not, often mistaken for Assault Rifle)
ArmaLite sold its rights to the AR-10 and AR-15 to Colt in 1959.
AR-15 was the original name for what after became the militarily designated M16, the assault rifle first used by the U.S. in the Vietnam War. The name AR-15 is now used almost exclusively to refer to the semi-automatic civilian version(s) of the M16.
The original AR-15 was a very lightweight weapon, weighing less than 6 pounds with empty magazine, though later heavy-barrel versions of the civilian AR-15 can weigh upwards of 8.5 lbs.
The SP1 was made by the same manufacturer as the military M16, Colt, on the same production lines as the military rifle. The original SP1 has no forward assist and three prong flashhider was produced from 1964 to 1985 .
Each part of the rifle is stamped with a “C” to indicate manufacture by Colt. The SP1 contains all the engineering changes made to the US Rifle, M16, including chrome bore and chamber, closed prong flashhider has a 20″ barrel, with 1 in 12 inch rifling twist.
